8.0 Results 50s day / Picture Party

It is daunting to edit hundreds of shoots, especially after the wonderfull crew at Jaeninne`s gave us so many opportunities and complete freedom to, frankly, just mess around and respond to the themed setting.

Working with a mobile flash system was new ( Bowens is still one of my favourite to work on any set inside and outside) for nearly all students but the intro and a little push into the cold water did the trick.
Well, I will always be there for backup.

Here are Esthers images ( and she is so ahead with Photoshop already..):

Instantly, I like to get dancing tonight, as an unleashed housewife maybe....

7.5 Streetdance part II

The result from the session with Briony and Eleni:

The secret is in the shutter speed for the moving subjects. But we had to fight with changing lighting conditions as well, clouds...

When the clouds are in and out of your set : support with a fill in flash from a flash gun or speed light.
Digital version with a cable gives you are variety of choises and you support natural lighting.

If you have sun, work with it, integrate the shadows into your composition. Work with it not against it.

Or block the sun out all together with a second reflector...
Soft light, indirect sunlight is perfect for close ups.

I just evend the colour and contrast with Photoshop.
The hard part was the editing, we have too much good stuff...
And thanks again to ALL the team for working in this heat!!!

We are setting up MASTERCLASS autum now.

7.0 Street dance part 1

This is my take on the subject, the session with Max:

I can`t make up my mind if this should stay colour or
it will be stronger in B \ W.....

6.0 50s portraits

Some post-production images in from Martina Mele:

This is a perfect example for an editorial shot with a theme updated.
Using the studio light on location gives this images a good twist.
Thanks to Styling and Make-up.
A bit retouching done in part II to polish.

Post-production from Natalie Carle:

Fantastic portrait which can stand alone or be a start of a series.
They remind me a bit of Cindy Sherman with her self-portraits of movie characters
series. Well done!!!!
Here some example for colour management to catch the era:

4.0 Part II : Editing skills and Post-production

Going through hundreds of images after the production  can be very daunting.

We did not thing about that part of a production when we jumped into the Masterclass in the first place but soon students were asking: how do you do it, how do you decide, how to manage the mass of images and workflow?

Checking on the day and deleting the really unwanted stuff can be one option but ...
who does that, who`s got the time and energie and capacity on a location to decide and not delete a good image by accident.
Solution: keep everything , have plenty of cards on the shoot and invest some time in the aftermath.

Editing skills: in part II we went through managing Bridge as a support software with the rating system to scale vast amounts of images down in the first run and then being very hard during the second run to get your final images you like to

1. sent to models, 2. put on-line as a published version , 3. portfolio  a) online or b) printed.

Another way is you should know what kind of genre you like to tap into :
From the 3 different days you could choose either fashion or editorial or general photo documentary with focus on portraits for privat clients.

The images we liked for the portrait portfolios got some post-production treatment I introduced in during the 1:1 sessions in Part II. Here are some results:
This portrait was shot by Martina Mele.

We joked on set that Karimah is our answer to Elisabeth Taylor but the lifting of the images and streamlining the skin tone and make-up appearence gives it some Hollywood glam.

Natalie Carle played around with conversion to B/W:
and colour management
Especially in fashion photography theme mixing colour and B/W brings in an extra dimension.

3.0 SAKTE & STREETDANCE

The last theme of the summer Masterclass was again something completely different altogether.
We were relying on good weather but this time it worked out quite well.
Everybody met at a ALEXANDER PALACE in NorthLondon and I was very happy to have found a brilliantant young contemporary dancers Max Benjamine for the morning session and Briony Humphry, director of GIVE INTO DANCE with her colleague Eline.

The aim this time was to get experience with a fast moving subject:
finding the perfect shutter speed and keep an ey on your composition.
Very tricky but with a model like Max
we were given plenty of set ups.

We only had to make sure we gave him some breaks.
And on top Max safed the day when a securit guard from ALLI PALLI came paying us a visit. In the morning we were not in the way of to many teenagers but he did not wanted to accept my permission from ENGLISH HERITAGE.
So Max had a one to one with another guy from the neighbourhood and we could round up our session.

Team of the day: Stylist MARLENA, dancer & producer MAX
and my now beloved URZSULA for make-up:

The class had to move now: FINSBURY PARK is close by and got parking!!!
Lunch break for us at the cafe behind ALLI PALLI,
so Urzsula could start her make up on Max and we had a quick break down what the students had achieved so far.FINSBURY PARK skater park turned out be get busy but with a performance from Max :

Close up shoots

and the girls dancing....

It was really hot but everybody was quite sad that the summer MASTERCLASS came to an end.

Next step is now the post-production and we can display the results!!
